How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies

Until you can get into the office to see us, here are some tips for addressing some of the most common dental emergencies.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

This common dental emergency often happens as the result of a sports-related trauma or another type of impact.

  • If the tooth is clean, place it back in the socket. Handle the tooth by its upper end (the crown) not by the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty rinse it in milk or gently suck it clean before placing it back in the socket.
  • If the tooth can’t be replaced, envelop it in plastic wrap or store it in a small container of milk, and bring it into the office.

A Toothache

Anyone who experiences a throbbing toothache wants relief fast. Until you can get into the practice for an appointment, you can find relief by applying a cold compress to the cheek outside the affected area, rinsing your mouth with salt water and taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

If you believe you have a dental emergency, don’t delay seeking care. Addressing the emergency when it’s a smaller problem can prevent more serious and costly procedures down the road.
