Wisdom Teeth Removal at Gold Coast Aesthetic Dentistry

Wisdom Toothe Removal Burleigh HeadsThe majority of people have four wisdom teeth—two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw. These teeth, which are considered the third set of molars, begin developing in the teenage years and may continue into a person’s late 20s. Though wisdom teeth may never cause any problems, they could require removal due to complications.

Reasons Why Removal May Be Necessary

At Gold Coast Aesthetic Dentistry, we will determine if your wisdom teeth are healthy and properly positioned. Your dentist will visually inspect the area and take X-rays to evaluate the situation under the gum line. This process helps determine if the wisdom teeth require removal.

Though not everyone will need to have their wisdom teeth removed, some people may due to the following reasons:

  • Discomfort or pain
  • Impaction
  • Cysts or tumours
  • Crowding
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay that can’t be remedied

Keeping You Comfortable

If removal is necessary, we will discuss a variety of sedation options to make the experience as comfortable as possible. These include local anaesthetic or intravenous sedation in the dental chair or under general anaesthetic in a hospital.

My wisdom teeth aren’t bothering me or causing any issues. Why do I need to have them removed?

Most people have insufficient room in their jaws for their wisdom teeth to erupt properly; as a result, the wisdom teeth become impacted.

What do I need to do to prepare for my wisdom tooth extraction?

Your dentist will provide you with more detailed instructions, but if you’re having IV sedation, you will need to fast before the appointment. You also will need to arrange for an adult to drive you home after the appointment.

How should I take care of the extraction site after the procedure?

Your dentist will provide detailed post-operative instructions, which include keeping the site clean to avoid infection. As recovery can be uncomfortable, you may be prescribed pain medication or advised to take acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Will insurance cover wisdom teeth removal?

We accept all major funds. Because cover varies from plan to plan, wisdom teeth removal may or may not be covered. If your plan doesn’t cover it, we offer convenient payment plans.
